The purpose of a three phase variable shunt reactor is to compensate for the capacitive charging current in large cable grids. The shunt reactor vector group can be either delta or wye.

The shunt reactor is connected to the grid in order to reduce the reactive transformer load and keep the grid voltage on acceptable levels.
